Hunter swimmer Claire Jackson voted Preps Utah athlete of the week

Hunter High swimmer Claire Jackson was the runaway winner of the Preps Utah player of the week for Week 10 of the 2014-2015 school year. The freestyle champion got a surge of votes during the latter part of the week and pulled away in voting by Preps Utah readers online at

With nearly 1,000 votes cast, Jackson received nearly 65 percent, giving her the top spot in voting for the week of Dec. 8. Juan Diego girls basketball star Monique Mills gained 20 percent to finish second, while Liz Eaton of Maple Mountain basketball was third with about 7 percent of the vote. The remaining tallies were split between Viewmont basketball’s Katie Toole and West swimmer Autumn Wolfgram.

Jackson is the defending state champion in the 100-yard freestyle, an event in which she has recorded Top 5 times statewide this season. She has expanded her horizons this year, with the best time so far in the 200 free and the second-best 500 free result. Her second event at state last year was the swimming sprint event, the 50 free, in which she finished third at the state meet.

She will receive a Preps Utah Athlete of the Week t-shirt and be entered into the pool for a school year-end drawing for a possible scholarship.

Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.

At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.

The Next Two Weeks

With the arrival of the holiday season, the next voting period will actually cover two weeks, the weeks of Dec. 15 and Dec. 22. We have nominated five of the top male winter sports athletes female athletes in the state for our Week 11 vote, as a pair of wrestlers join three basketball players for your consideration as player of the week. The nominees are wrestlers Johnny O’Hearon from Maple Mountain and Tyler Stevenson of Desert Hills, and the basketball players are Brighton’s Brock Miller, Tanner Nygren from Lehi and Jesse Wade of Davis.
