This week featured the largest margin of victory this year in voting for the Preps Utah player of the week for Week 11 of the 2014-2015 school year. Lehi basketball’s Tanner Nygren was the landslide winner in voting by Preps Utah readers online at PrepsUtah.com.
With more than 500 votes cast, Nygren received nearly 75 percent, giving him the top spot in voting for the holiday-induced two-week voting period that comprised the weeks of Dec. 15 and Dec. 22. Basketball players Jesse Wade from Davis and Brock Miller of Brighton, and wrestlers Johnny O’Hearon of Maple Mountain and Desert Hills’ Tyler Stevenson split the remaining 25 percent of the votes fairly equally.
Nygren has been among the top five scorers in the state the entire season, averaging nearly 25 points per game so far as he leads a talented Pioneer squad towards the rugged Region 4 schedule. Lehi is 9-1 in non-region action, with one more games Wednesday in the Riverton Holiday Tournament before opening league play against American Fork.
The 6-foot-3 junior will receive a Preps Utah Athlete of the Week t-shirt and be entered into the pool for a school year-end drawing for a possible scholarship.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
The Next Two Weeks
With the continuation of the holiday season, the next voting period will also cover two weeks, the weeks of Dec. 29 and Jan. 5. Five girls basketball players are up for our Week 12 vote – Layton’s Hailey Bassett, Jessica Matheson of Granger, Sky View’s Lindsey Jensen, Ashley Beckstrand from Desert Hills and Cylee Tuimaunei of Orem.
