Springville swimmer Conner Anderson voted Preps Utah player of the week

The state swimming championships are just around the corner, but Springville’s Conner Anderson has already scored his first win, holding off Skyline swimmer Adam Shelton in voting for the Preps Utah player of the week for the week of Jan. 26, 2015. The votes for Week 15 of this school year are all in, and with nearly 1,000 people weighing in at PrepsUtah.com, Anderson had just enough support to finish on top.

The Red Devil swimmer received 40 percent of the vote, while Shelton captured 33 percent as the two pulled away from three of the state’s most talented basketball players. Noah Togiai of Hunter was named by 15 percent of the voters who participated, while Granger’s Makol Mawien and Quincy Mathews of Desert Hills split the remaining votes.

Anderson will defend his state title in the 500-yard freestyle next week. He holds the top times in the state in both the 200 and 500 freestyle so far this season and is well positioned to make a strong run at the state meet.

Anderson will receive a Preps Utah Athlete of the Week t-shirt and be entered into the pool for a school year-end drawing for a possible scholarship.

Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.

At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
