Voting numbers were down a little for Week 17 of the Preps Utah player of the week voting, but the turnout for Davis High wrestler Wyatt Koelling was strong enough to carry the day for the week of Feb. 9, 2015. With just over 500 total votes coming in at PrepsUtah.com, Koelling received just over 50 percent to claim victory over four other state wrestling champions.
Brock Hardy from Box Elder finished second at 23 percent, followed by Payson’s Riley Loveless with 12 percent. Pleasant Grove’s Nelson Jones and Braiden Parker of Wasatch split the remaining tally.
Koelling won the Class 5A state wrestling title at 195 pounds with a pin. It was his second straight state championship, after he won the 2014 title at 182 pounds. The junior finished the season with a 38-1 record and then capped it by winning the Super State title as well. He will look for title No. 3 next season.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
Five of the state’s top girls’ swimmers are up for consideration this week, seeking readers’ votes as the Preps Utah player of the week. The candidates are Katie Smith of Lone Peak, Phebe James from Wasatch and Murray’s Madelyn Flower. Also, because we couldn’t select just one swimmer in two cases, we have nominated twin sisters (each off two state titles in 2015) Eva Gontrum & Zoe Phillips and also the entire girls swimming team at Park City.
Vote now by scrolling down the right-hand side of the Preps Utah website to the poll at www.prepsutah.com. Voting ends at 9 a.m. Monday.
