One of Class 1A’s top basketball players, Wyatt Muirbrook, was the runaway winner in voting for the Week 21 Preps Utah player of the week. Muirbrook opened a big lead early in the chase for the award for the week of March 9, 2015. As nearly 1,000 total votes came in, no one seriously challenged the Rich High state championship basketball star.
Muirbrook claimed nearly 75 percent of the votes, while Matt Cragun, who hit the championship-winner for Layton in the 5A hoops tourney, was second at about 15 percent. The remaining tally was split three ways between Bountiful’s Jeff Pollard, Kody Wilstead of Pine View and Connor Bolles from Manti.
Muirbrook was the tournament MVP at the 1A state championships, as he led his team to the state title. For the season, the 6-foot-1 senior averaged more than 16 points per game for the 22-4 Rebels, who won their first state championship with a 20-point win over Green River.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
Five of the state’s top softball players are up for consideration this week, seeking readers’ votes as the Preps Utah player of the week. The candidates are Emily Allman from Provo, Torri Bills of Wasatch, Kearns’ Tristan Evans, Summer Stensgard of Uintah and Alex Valencia from Syracuse.
