The votes started coming in early and continued throughout the week for Syracuse softball’s Alex Valencia, as she ran away with the Week 22 Preps Utah player of the week award. The pitcher, who also provides plenty of offense for the Titans, jumped to a lead and was never challenged as nearly 1,000 votes were recorded for the week of March 16, 2015.
Valencia finished the week with more than 75 percent of the votes, while Summer Stensgard of Uintah and Torri Bills from Wasatch each pulled in just under 10 percent. The remaining tally was split between Provo’s Emily Allman and Tristan Evans of Kearns.
Syracuse is out to a 9-2 record this season behind the leadership of Valencia, a senior who has a 6-2 mark as a pitcher and a ton of big offensive stats. She has hit seven home runs and blasted nine doubles already this season, after hitting nine long balls a year ago.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
Five of the state’s top boys soccer players are up for consideration this week, seeking readers’ votes as the Preps Utah player of the week. The candidates are Alta’s Einar Johnson, Parker Seegmiller of Riverton, Logan’s Josh Young, Angel Muniz from Snow Canyon and Provo’s Jonathan Ruvalcaba.
