Week 25 in voting for the Preps Utah player of the week went down to the wire. The week of April 6, 2015 delivered the closest three-way battle in the short three-year history of the award, as Stansbury’s Gage Manzione came from behind over the final 24 hours to win by a slim eight vote margin over Layton’s Braden Collingwood, with Paxton Schultz of Orem right on their heels, as slightly under 1,200 votes were cast.
Manzione received 30 percent of the votes, with Collingwood coming in just under 30 percent and Schultz came in at 27 percent. Bingham’s Sean Keating came in with just over 10 percent, while Payton Henry of Pleasant Grove received the remaining votes.
Manzione is batting .590 for the Stallions in 2015, with an incredible .630 on base percentage. He has 10 extra-base hits and 24 RBIs as well for the second-place team in Region 11 play.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
Softball is in the spotlight this week as five players are nominated for Preps Utah player of the week. Candidates are Breah Ava of West, Kaylee Bott from Spanish Fork, Stansbury’s Kimbri Herring, Emma Noble from Murray and Madison Rogers of Brighton.
