As one of the top high jumpers in the state, Desert Hills High senior Chandler Swaney has been soaring higher than the competition for quite some time. Last week, he rose to the top in voting for the Preps Utah player of the week during Week 27 of the 2014-2015 school year. The voting was never really close, as Swaney won the award for the week of April 20, 2015 over four other top track and field performers.
Swaney captured more than 70 percent of the votes, as just a tad over 1,000 total votes were received, to win by a wide margin over new 200-meter state record holder Chase Heiner from Provo, who finished second at 15 percent. American Fork’s McKay Johns, Andre James of Herriman and Skyler Andam from Copper Hills split the remaining 15 percent.
The defending Class 3A state high jump champion, Swaney has recorded a jump that places him among the top five statewide this season. His 6-foot-6-inch leap is the No. 1 height in 3A so far, as he looks to equal or best the 6-foot-8 he cleared in winning the state championship a year ago.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
We have selected five girls track and field athletes for your consideration this week as Preps Utah player of the week. Candidates are Paige Erickson of Davis, Olivia Leavitt from Desert Hills, Herriman’s Kaysha Love, Elsja Mecham of Summit Academy and Lindsay Yetter of Ogden.
