For the second consecutive week the Desert Hills track and field team came up big in voting for the Preps Utah player of the week. For last week, the award goes in a landslide to Thunder hurdler Olivia Leavitt. Leavitt ran away from the competition for Week 28 of the 2014-2015 school year and won the award for the week of April 27, 2015 over four other top track and field performers.
The senior captured just over 80 percent of the vote, with her closest pursuer being Herriman’s talented state-record setting sprinter Kaysha Love, who garnered 10 percent of the support. Summit Academy’s Elsja Mecham earned five percent, while Lindsey Yetter from Ogden and Davis’ Paige Erickson split the remaining votes.
A three-event Class 3A state champion (200-meter, 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles) in 2014, Leavitt is fresh off a pair of titles at the BYU Invitational in both hurdle races.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
We have selected five soccer players for your consideration this week as Preps Utah player of the week. Candidates are Titi Chichia of American Leadership Academy, Isaac Hunter from Layton, Bountiful’s Cole Palmer, James Pena of Mountain View and West’s Raul Sanchez.
