Three outstanding soccer players pulled away from the pack as Week 29 of the 2014-2015 school year progressed in voting for the Preps Utah player of the week. It appears that a strong social media push was a key factor that allowed Layton High’s Isaac Hunter to gain a little separation over the week. Hunter was voted the player of the week for the week of May 4, 2015.
The senior goalkeeper received slightly under 45 percent of the vote, as just over 1,000 people participated in our poll. James Pena of Mountain View finished second with 35 perecent, while American Leadership Academy scorer Titi Chichia was third at just under 15 percent. Bountiful’s Cole Palmer and Raul Sanchez from West split the remaining votes.
Hunter recorded eight shutouts between the posts for the Lancers during the regular season, who won the Region 2 title with a 9-0-1 record. He now leads Layton into the postseason as it looks to make a deep playoff run.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
At the end of the school year, we will draw at random one of our female and one male weekly winner, and the two athletes whose names are selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past two years, we have awarded $4,000 in scholarships to Utah high school student-athletes.
We have selected five golfers for your consideration this week as Preps Utah player of the week. The candidates are Lone Peak’s Kerstin Fotu, Katie Perkins from Desert Hills, Jessica Sloot of Davis, Provo’s Naomi Soifua and Karen Valcarce of Bountiful.
