Week 3 (2015-16 school sports year) of voting for the Preps Utah player of the week went from a tight race to a runaway, as Morgan volleyball’s Aubrey Saunders pulled away from the field for a commanding win.
When voting for the week of Oct. 5 ended Monday at noon, the Trojan middle had opened a wide margin, receiving 70 percent of the more than 4,000 votes cast. Rylin Roberts of Lehi hung close for the first few days, but finished at 15 percent, with Springville’s Amanda Schultz coming in at 10 percent, while Rachel Parson from Northridge and Alexsa “Crash” Parker of Snow Canyon split the remaining votes.
Saunders is one of the state’s most efficient players at the net, with a hitting percentage close to .400 and a low error rate. She and her Morgan teammates are unbeaten this season at 26-0, a run that includes wins over 5A power Lehi and the Snow Canyon team that beat the Trojans for the state title a year ago.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
We focus on boys golf for this week’s voting as five of the state’s top players, all of whom won either an individual or team state title last week, are up for your consideration: Connor Howe (Weber), Josh Lillywhite (Timpview), Carson Lundell (Lone Peak), Rhett Rasmussen (Corner Canyon) and Mitchell Schow (Park City).
