The Week 4 (2015-16 school sports year) Preps Utah player of the week poll turned out nearly 2,000 total votes as Weber High golfer Connor Howe held off Josh Lillywhite of Timpview and three other golfers to receive the honor.
Once all of the votes were counted, the Class 5A state golf champion had collected nearly 60 percent of the votes. Lillywhite as second with 35 percent, while Carson Lundell (Lone Peak), Rhett Rasmussen (Corner Canyon) and Mitchell Schow (Park City) split the remaining votes.
Howe backed up a first-round 62 with a 68 to shoot a two-day 130 at the state tournament, good enough for a one-stroke victory over Cole Ponich of Davis. His tournament-low score led the Warriors to a second-place finish, four shots behind Lone Peak, the heavy pre-tournament favorite.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
We focus on girls tennis for this week’s voting as five of the state’s top players, all of whom won either an individual or team state title last week, are up for your consideration: Emilee Astle (Alta), Leah Heimuli (Lone Peak), Sabrina Longson (Olympus), Livi Rockwood (Park City) and Whitney Turley (Davis).
