Vote totals were down a bit during Week 6 of the 2015-2016 Preps Utah player of the week poll. With slightly less than 500 total votes cast, the count ended in a dead heat as American Fork cross country’s Casey Clinger and North Summit runner Jace Richins shared the honor for the week of Oct. 26.
Both Clinger and Richins received 149 votes this week (30 percent of the total tally) for our first tie in the three years of the player of the week program. Nick Hill of Pine View cross country was third with 20 percent, while William Handley (Timpanogos) and Alek Parsons (Ogden) split the remaining votes.
Clinger, a junior, who finished second at the 5A state championships his sophomore year, ran to the 2015 Class 5A state cross country title in a time of 14:52.8. Richins captured his first 2A state cross country title as the junior covered the course in 16:21.9.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
The athletes nominated this week are a combination of girls soccer and cross country state champions. Anna Camp (Millard) won 2A state titles in both soccer and cross country, while Kate Hunter (Provo) is the two-time 4A cross country state title winner. The other three candidates are from girls soccer state champions – Mikayla Colohan (Davis), Emma Heyn (Skyline) and Veronica Sullivan (Logan).
