After more than 4,000 PrepsUtah.com readers registered their votes votes for the Week 13 2015-2016 PrepsUtah.com player of the week, Brighton High swimmer Rachel Butler came out on top. The nominees included five of the state’s top female swimmers, and due to the Christmas holiday, we extended voting to cover two weeks (the weeks of Dec. 14 and Dec. 21). By the time voting closed, Butler survived an outstanding two-way battle with West’s Autumn Wolfgramm to win the honor.
Butler finished with 55 percent of the votes, while Wolfgramm ended up with 40 percent. Hunter’s Claire Jackson, Rhyan White of Cottonwood and McKenna Gassaway from Viewmont split the remaining votes.
Butler, a freshman at Brighton, will have to choose two events from among a number in which she has recorded top times during the early part of the 2015-16 swimming season. She has the fastest time in the state thus far in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle and also owns the No. 2 time so far in the 100-yard backstroke.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
