Trevin Knell, Woods Cross basketball, voted player of the week

A strong closing weekend carried Woods Cross basketball’s Trevin Knell to the top spot in voting for the Week 16 player of the week for 2015-2016. More than 4,000 votes were cast the week of Jan. 18, and voting was tight between Knell and runner-up Maizen Fausett of Westlake for much of the week before the Woods Cross star opened up a solid advantage over the final few days of voting.

Knell captured just over 65 percent of the vote in a poll that featured five of the state’s top boys basketball players, while Fausett finished at 25 percent. Dixie’s Tyler Bennett, Spencer Johnson of American Fork and Dacian Spotted Elk from East split the remaining votes.

The 6-foot-5 junior forward has led the way as the Wildcats share the lead thus far atop the Region 5 standings. Knell scored nearly 21 points per game, and he is one of the state’s top 3-point shooters.
