Nearly 22,000 votes came in during Week 17 of the PrepsUtah.com player of the week poll for the 2015-2016 school sports year. With the large turnout for the week of Jan. 25, which featured five of the state’s most talented girls basketball players, the voting turned into a two-way battle until Juan Diego Catholic High School’s Becca Curran used a weekend surge to pull away and capture the honor.
Curran finished with 50 percent of the vote, while Bella Harrington of Maeser Prep, who was in and out of the lead all week, ended up with 43 percent. Tahlia White from Mountain View was third at four percent, while Park City’s Jessica Perry and Dani Barton of Brighton split the remaining votes.
Curran, a 5-foot-7 junior was played a key role for the Soaring Eagle as they ran the table a year ago to win the 3A state title, and she has taken on a leadership role as this year’s team looks to repeat. Her 17 points and nearly five rebounds per game have helped Juan Diego to the top spot thus far in Region 11 play.
