The voting for our Week 18 PrepsUtah.com player of the week for the 2015-2016 school sports year was pretty one-sided almost from the outset. The overall voting turnout for the week of Feb. 1, which featured five of the state’s best wrestlers, was smaller than some of our recent polls, but a large percentage of the nearly 1,000 votes went to Herriman’s Jaron Jensen.
Jensen ended up with just over 65 percent of the votes to separate himself from second-place finisher Koy Wilkinson from Pleasant Grove, who finished at 14 percent. Maple Mountain’s four-time state champion Taylor LaMont wound up at just under 10 percent, while Wyatt Koelling of Davis and Wasatch’s Ben Bos split the remaining votes.
Jensen earned the 5A state championship in the 145-pound weight class to complete the season with a record of 51-2. It was the second Utah state title for the Herriman senior, who also took state at 138 pounds a year ago.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
