With just over 750 votes coming in, McKenzie Cottle of Fremont High softball was the selection as the Week 24 PrepsUtah.com player of the week for the 2015-2016 school sports year. Cottle was behind early, but by midweek, she began to pull away in voting for the week of March 14 and she won in a landslide over four other softball players as we enter the spring sports season in our player of the week voting.
Cottle received more than 75 percent of the votes for the week, while the other four candidates all finished near each other at about six percent. Those four – Gabby Beckstrom from Spanish Fork, Hurricane’s Jaiden Smith, Box Elder’s Taylor Sorenson and Taylei Williams of Juab split the remaining votes.
After hitting seven home runs and 13 doubles for the Silver Wolves a year ago, Cottle is off to a fast start with the bat again this year as Fremont is off to a 5-3 start in its pursuit of a return to the a deep run in the state tournament.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
