Week 28 in the PrepsUtah.com player of the week program for the 2015-16 school sports year was a second consecutive week to produce a low vote totals, but of the 400 people who did participate, the heavy support went to Summit Academy track and field star Elsja Mecham. The sprinter/hurdler pulled away late in the week to out-poll four other young ladies who have come out strong this spring.
Mecham received the support of slightly less than 65 percent of those who voted, with Isabella James of West (12 percent) and Lone Peak’s Emily Ellis (9 percent) as her closest pursuers. Brielle Carr of Herriman and American Fork’s Sara Musselman split the remaining votes.
As of this week, the Summit Academy senior has the best overall performance in the state in the 100-meter hurdles. She has also recorded the third best overall time in the state in both the 200 and 400 meters, bettered only by a pair of Class 5A runners. Competing in Class 2A, Mecham will be a heavy favorite in all three events at the state meet and should also factor in at 800 meters, another event in which she has one of the state’s best times this season.
