Voter turnout on the website was back to its normal higher levels during Week 31 of the PrepsUtah.com player of the week program for the 2015-16 school sports. As the week progressed more than 8,000 votes were cast and that played to the advantage of Lone Peak baseball’s Payton Freeman, who pulled away to a comfortable margin as our winner for the week of May 2.
Freeman finished with slightly less than 60 percent of the total tally, almost 20 percent ahead of second-place finisher Josh Glenn from Juan Diego, with Orem’s Paxton Schultz running a distant third. Josh Brown of Northridge and Wil Jensen from Cottonwood split the remaining votes.
A strong pitcher (5-2, 3.94 ERA) for the Region 4 champion Knights, Freeman, who plays left field when he’s not on the mound, finished the regular season with a .453 batting average. He was one of the state’s most productive offensive players with 52 RBI and 32 runs scored. His six home runs put him among the state leaders, and he also banged seven doubles and two triples.
