Five of the state’s top softball players were in the spotlight for Week 32 of the PrepsUtah.com player of the week program for the 2015-16 school sports year. By the time voting came to a close, two-time defending state champion Sydney White of Lehi was the winner as just under 500 votes were cast for the week of May 9.
White pulled away as the week progressed and finished with 75 percent, while Alta’s Brooke Vanderheide was second at close to 10 percent. Breah Ava (West), Brielle Chisholm (South Sevier) and Heather Prestwich (Snow Canyon) split the remaining votes.
After their win over Layton top open this year’s state tournament, White and the Pioneers head to the second round of the postseason with a 25-6 record. The senior, who will play collegiately at Weber State University has been key in the pitcher’s circle for two Lehi state-championship runs and she is 8-2 this season, with a 1.30 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 62 innings pitcher. White is also one of the state’s most talented offensive players, with a .430 batting average, eight home runs and 27 RBI.
