Turnout was extremely strong to close out our PrepsUtah.com player of the week program for the 2015-16 school sports year. The Week 33 vote produced nearly 15,000 total votes and a tight race for the top spot between a pair of high-scoring soccer stars. Coming just after he led his team to a state championship, Waterford’s Cale Lopez held off Jaden Wood of Sky View to win the honor for the week of May 16.
Lopez received just over 50 percent of the votes compared to just over 40 percent for Wood. Juan Diego Catholic High goalkeeper Martin Kelly was third at seven percent, while Eric Morris of Weber and Maple Mountain’s Spencer Young split the remaining votes.
Lopez scored 18 goals this season for Waterford, which won the 2A state championship last week.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
Week 33 was the final week of voting for this school sports year. Check out our next poll the first week of September 2016 as we open another year honoring the state’s top high school athletes.
