Week 1 of the 2016-17 school sports year voting for the Preps Utah player of the week is in the books. We opened the new school year with a poll recognizing the accomplishments of five outstanding goal scorers in girls soccer. The result of our opening week of voting, the week of Sept. 12, was a two-way race that was eventually won by Alta’s Brecken Mozingo.
With just over 500 votes counted, the Hawks’ talented sophomore striker won the week with close to 55 percent of the tally. Davis High junior scoring sensation Olivia Wade was second with 38 percent. The remaining votes were split between McKenzie Landward of Stansbury, Cassidy from Skyline and Lone Peak’s Cameron Tucker.
Mozingo tends to score in bunches. After not scoring in Alta’s season-opening 2-1 loss to Weber, she has at least two goals in each of the 11 matches since, recording a total of 33 goals so far this season. The Hawks won all 11 of those contests to reach 11-1 for the season and claim control of the Region 7 title chase. Mozingo scored 12 times her freshman year, putting her at 45 goals in a career that is not yet half complete.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
Football takes center stage in this week’s voting as five of the state’s top gridiron stars go head-to-head – Lehi’s Cammon Cooper, Mason Fakahua of Cedar, Sese Felila from Kearns, Jordan’s Isaiah Jackson and Angelo Rios of Ben Lomond.
