The second week of the 2016-17 school sports year, we put the spotlight on football in voting for the Preps Utah player of the week. Five impressive offensive players were nominated and after the final votes came in, Lehi quarterback Cammon Cooper was the readers’ selection for the week of Sept. 19.
With just under 500 votes coming in, the junior southpaw passer won the week with more than 70 percent of the count. Sese Felila of Kearns and Ben Lomond’s Angelo Rios each received 10 percent, while the remaining votes were split between Jordan’s Isaiah Jackson and Mason Fakahua of Cedar.
Cooper airs out more than just about any other signal caller in the state. He has thrown it 222 times over the first six games of the campaign, a lofty 37 passes per contest. The junior has completed 64 percent of his passes and averages 325 yards per game through the air, with 22 touchdowns against eight interceptions for a 4-2 Pioneer team.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
We focus on volleyball for our Week 3 PrepsUtah.com player of the week poll, with five players nominated – Breanne Bitter (Clearfield), Charity Bradley (Desert Hills), Libbie Darling (Davis), Audrey Green (Intermountain Christian) or Maddi Vigil (Fremont).
