For Week 3 of the 2016-17 school sports year, voting for the Preps Utah player of the week featured five outstanding volleyball players who are out to a great start in 2016. It was a tight battle for a while, but eventually Fremont senior Maddi Vigil pulled away to win the honor for the week of Sept. 26.
With slightly more than 500 votes recorded, Vigil received slightly over 60 percent, with Intermountain Christian’s Audrey Green finishing second at 20 percent. Breanne Bitter (Clearfield), Charity Bradley (Desert Hills) and Libbie Darling (Davis) split the remaining votes.
The senior outside hitter is one of the state’s elite scorers with more than 200 kills at a 43 percent rate. Vigil and her Silverwolves teammates are in the hunt in Region 1 at 6-2 so far (10-6 overall).
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
