As he did at the Class 5A state golf tournament, Weber’s Connor Howe was too much to handle in Week 4 voting for Preps Utah player of the week for the 2016-17 school sports year. Howe got out to the lead early in the week and his voters carried him to the honor for the week of Oct. 3.
With just a few less than 500 votes recorded, Howe carried nearly 70 percent, while Max Brenchley of Lone Peak received nearly 15 percent. Brock Nielson (Salem Hills), Blake Tomlinson (Skyline) and Elijah Turner (Lone Peak) split the remaining votes.
Howe, a junior, won his second straight 5A individual state championship on the Silver Course at Soldier Hollow in Midway. After opening with a 70, Howe shot a second-day 66 to pull even with Lone Peak’s Turner and then won the title with a birdie on 18, the first playoff hole.
Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.
