She’s been dominating the state’s tennis courts for years and while it wasn’t as dominant a win as those she earns on the court, Davis High senior Whitney Turley was the leading vote-getter during Week 5 of the Preps Utah player of the week program for the 2016-17 school sports year. Turley held off four other tennis stars for the honor for the week of Oct. 10.
With just a few less than 500 votes recorded, Turley won the week with 30 percent of the vote, while Naya Tillett of Ridgeline was just a few votes behind with 25 percent. Alta’s Emilee Astle took 20 percent, and Emma Jewell of Olympus and Gabby Rockwood from Park City split the remaining votes.
Turley captured her fourth consecutive Class 5A state tennis championship with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lone Peak’s Daniela Aaron. The Dart senior lost just three games through four matches on her way to another individual state title and in the process, she led her team to the 5A team title.
