Desert Hills’ Melendrez is Week 8 player of the week

Desert Hills runner Jaiden Melendrez capped his outstanding career with a state title and also finished way ahead of the competition in voting for the Week 8 Preps Utah player of the week honor for the 2016-17 school sports year. Melendrez finished with just over 80 percent of the vote and claimed the top spot in our vote for the week of Oct. 31.

With just over 500 votes cast, Melendrez was on the receiving of most, with Joe Benson of Timpanogos running second, as Casey Clinger of American Fork), North Summit’s Jace Richins and Jonah Schoppe of Panguitch split the remaining votes.

Melendrez raced to the 3A boys state cross country championship and in the process led the Thunder to the team championship.

Each week, we select five new candidates for consideration by the followers of prep sports in the state of Utah as the Preps Utah athlete of the week. Readers vote online on our website at PrepsUtah.com and the winner is announced on Monday, when five new nominees are announced.

Volleyball champions are the focus for Week 9 of the PrepsUtah.com player of the week poll and our five candidates are Ashlin Blonquist (North Summit), Anna Cox (Morgan), Shantae Miller (Rich), Madi Robinson (Lone Peak) and Seyvion Waggoner (Bountiful).

Vote now by scrolling down the center column of the Preps Utah website to the poll at www.prepsutah.com. Voting ends at noon Monday, Nov. 14.
