PrepsUtah.com has joined forces with Anython to announce this year’s coach of the week honorees. Each week during this school year, we select a boys team and a girls team coach who represents the best the state has to offer in coaching excellence.
Anython, a unique company helping teams and groups raise money to run their programs, is the sponsor of this award. The company will present to each weekly winner a certificate and a coach of the week water bottle and will provide the teams at the winners’ schools a special offer to utilize the fundraising services it provides.
Our Week 12 2017-2018 boys team coach of the week is Jeremy Hill of the Orem High football team. Hill led his team to a Class 4A state title, culminating with an impressive 26-0 state championship game win over Mountain Crest. The Region 10 champions were unbeaten in league play and finished the season at 12-2, with the only two losses coming to 6A state champ Bingham and a very talented Corner Canyon squad.
The Tigers’ run to the title featured a number of impressive performances as they beat Bear River 36-7 before taking down perennial power Desert Hills and then previously unbeaten Sky View to reach the state championship game matchup with Mountain Crest. The 37-17 victory over Desert Hills showcased the kind of performances that made Hill’s Orem team special.
Quarterback Cooper Legas passed for 340 yards and four touchdowns in that one, with junior wideout Puka Nacua putting on an amazing show on the outside. Nacua caught eight balls for 270 yards and three scores and also had a 90-plus yard kick return in one of the most dynamic performances of many for him. His season numbers included 1,691 receiving yards (second best all-time) and a state-record tying 24 touchdowns.
Led by Billy Tenney and state sack leader (17) Austin Kirkby, the Tiger defense was also a huge part of what turned out to be one of the state’s elite teams. With Legas and Nacua back for more in 2018, Hill has much to which he can look forward.
The state championship dominating performance of his Orem team makes Coach Hill our Anython boys team Coach of the Week for the weeks of Nov. 20 and Nov. 27, 2017.
