PrepsUtah.com has joined forces with Anython to announce this year’s coach of the week honorees. Each week during this school year, we select a boys team and a girls team coach who represents the best the state has to offer in coaching excellence.
Anython, a unique company helping teams and groups raise money to run their programs, is the sponsor of this award. The company will present to each weekly winner a certificate and a coach of the week water bottle and will provide the teams at the winners’ schools a special offer to utilize the fundraising services it provides.
Our Week 13 2017-2018 boys team coach of the week is John Lambourne of the Bingham High football team. His 2017 6A state football title is the second straight for Lambourne and the Miners and the 11th overall for the Bingham program.
The Miners finished off a perfect 13-0 season with a 27-14 victory over East in the state championship game. That 14 points allowed was a postseason high against the Miner defense, which allowed just seven in each of its first three playoff victories. The team’s calling card is depth and an unselfish attitude, and both were on display during the title run, as Amoni Kaili delivered the big runs against East when the team’s leading rusher Braedon Wissler was struggling a bit in the ground game.
But defense is Bingham’s real calling card, as Saleka Ata’ata, Simote Pepa, Lolani Langi and Kobi Matagi led the way. A Miner team that usually avoids using two-way players did get a lift this year from their top pass catchers Brayden Cosper and Dax Milne also contributing in a big way in the defensive secondary.
Another UHSAA state title at Bingham makes Coach Lambourne our Anython boys team Coach of the Week for the week of Dec. 4, 2017.
Nominate a deserving coach for one of our weekly honors by sending an email with the name, school and sport of the coach and the reason we should honor him or her to firstname.lastname@example.org.
