PrepsUtah.com has joined forces with Anython to announce this year’s coach of the week honorees. Each week during this school year, we select a boys team and a girls team coach who represents the best the state has to offer in coaching excellence.
Anython, a unique company helping teams and groups raise money to run their programs, is the sponsor of this award. The company will present to each weekly winner a certificate and a coach of the week water bottle and will provide the teams at the winners’ schools a special offer to utilize the fundraising services it provides.
Our Week 17 2017-2018 girls team coach of the week is Clint Straatman of the Viewmont High girls basketball team. A year ago, Straatman led the Vikings to the Class 5A state championship game where they lost to American Fork. Now, in his eighth year at Viewmont and coming off that 21-4 campaign of a year ago, the coach has his team on course to make another postseason run.
While much of last year’s Class 5A has moved to the new 6A, the Vikings remain in 5A, where they are among the favorites this season, paced by reigning 5A MVP Mercedes Staples, who averages 21 points per game. During the past week, Viewmont closed out its non-region schedule with a 61-35 win in a rematch of last season’s title game with American Fork followed by a 48-47 victory over 6A powerhouse Bingham.
The wins pushed this year’s Viewmont team to a 10-1 record, and that makes Coach Straatman our Anython girls team Coach of the Week for the week of Jan. 15, 2018.
Nominate a deserving coach for one of our weekly honors by sending an email with the name, school and sport of the coach and the reason we should honor him or her to firstname.lastname@example.org.
