Anython Coach of the Week

Anython coaches of Week 25-Francom & DeGraffenried, Salem Hills

PrepsUtah.com has joined forces with Anython to announce this year’s coach of the week honorees. Each week during this school year, we select a boys team and a girls team coach who represents the best the state has to offer in coaching excellence.

Anython, a unique company helping teams and groups raise money to run their programs, is the sponsor of this award. The company will present to each weekly winner a certificate and a coach of the week water bottle and will provide the teams at the winners’ schools a special offer to utilize the fundraising services it provides.

Our Week 25 2017-2018 girls and boys team coaches of the week come from the same school. That’s because of what happened March 3 at Utah Valley University, where Salem Hills fans celebrated both the girls and boys 4A state tournament championships. Kyle Francom is our girls team coach of the week, while Jimmy DeGraffenried is our boys honoree as the two led their teams to championships on the same day.

For Francom’s Region 10 co-champs, the title capped a 24-1 campaign that included 18 wins by double-digit margins. For the Skyhawks, that included state tournament wins by scores of 62-25, 58-48, 60-40 and then 57-35 over Hurricane in the state finale. Lauren Gustin scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the tourney title contest and averaged 29 and 17 for the season to lead Salem Hills to the girls championship.

The boys team took a different route to the title, though it was outstanding once it arrived at the region schedule. The Skyhawk boys were 11-1 in Region 10 play and 20-7 for the season, and with James Nelson leading the way, DeGraffenried’s Salem Hills team was at its best in the big games, culminating with a 70-60 win over Sky View for the state championship.

The dual championships make Francom and DeGraffenried our Anython girls and boys team Coaches of the Week for the week of March 12, 2018.

Nominate a deserving coach for one of our weekly honors by sending an email with the name, school and sport of the coach and the reason we should honor him or her to kurt@prepsutah.com.
